I decided to buy dietary supplements and vitamins

We asked one of our customers to share his experience of purchasing dietary supplements and vitamins.

„To strengthen my immune system, I decided to buy dietary supplements and vitamins. In order to buy the best possible supplements and vitamins for me, I tried various options.

I started by going to a family doctor. After the consultation, the doctor prescribed a series of tests. Tests did not show serious disease however, the doctor prescribed medicines for stomach acidity, „bad“ cholesterol and other minor illnesses. It reduced some symptoms, but occured others. I was interested in the side effects of the prescribed medicines – they are far from being perfect, often they can cause even greater deficiency of nutrients and vitamins. The doctor was sceptical about prescribing dietary supplements — there will still be no considerable impact. Yet, the doctor acknowledged that he preferred medications, and supplements were not his object of interest.

Subsequently, I went to a local pharmacy which belongs to a large pharmacy network. A pharmacist suggested buying the “best” and most expensive dietary supplements which were “lucky” on the sale that week. I was happy – a lot of supplements expensive supplements were on sale. Then I looked at those supplements’ descriptions. Some of them contained only lists of basic substances like magnesium or calcium, but there was no additional information about those substances’ chemical formulas. For example, calcium carbonate is the simplest chalk, and calcium citrate is already better absorbed by the human body and just a more expensive form of calcium. Additionally, I spotted that for some reason, the pharmacist offered only one type of supplements to me, and all the others were left behind. I realized that selling this type of supplements was more useful to the seller, but not necessarily to the buyer.

Before buying supplements in an online shop, I was cautious not to be tricked. Offered supplements contained mixes of various substances and were named „the best“. However, after a profound insight, I realized that „best“ supplements were not indeed best supplements and not necessarily the most suitable for a customer.

I also found pages on the Internet that ask to fill questionnaires and based on your answers sends you purchase’ recommendations. The questionnaire and recommendations were free of charge, so I decided to try them. After filling the questionnaire, I got the specific recommendation to buy supplements that can be found only on their website and I couldn’t find them elsewhere. Moreover, I could find neither these supplements’ descriptions nor manufacturer, in that way, I came to the conclusion that the website only tried to sell their own supplements, and that the questionnaire’ answers probably were worthless.

At a first glance, a questionnaire on the Yellow page looked similar to the one mentioned earlier, yet the supplement plan was paid, and it was not possible to purchase supplements on the Yellow page itself. It took my interest because I understood that the Yellow is independent of supplement manufacturers and sellers, and the Yellow has no interest in suggesting the most expensive dietary supplements.  After filling in the questionnaire I stopped again –  the next step was- payment for the plan. Is it worthpaying for both: the plan and supplements? The reassurance that top -notch supplements made by well known and researched manufactureres was tempted, but that supplement fee stopped again – will the supplement really fit, or is Yellow not a fictitious seller? Confirmations that there is a legally registered vendor MB Geltonas and that there is a chance to get refundfor the plan within 30 days if I am not satis fied wit the supplements purchased under the plan were key factors in ordering a paid supplement plan. The received plan was clear  With specific names of the supplements and references where I can buy it. It was not just one or another online store. There were well-known online stores. The composition of obtained supplements was detailed, The clear dosage instuctions. The other hand – if I will find supplements by myself, I will save on supplements plan. But nobody knows how long time will take my research  of suitable supplements and their combinations.

Acid reflux is a big problem

Dr. Hyman (www.drhyman.com) in his blog discuss the Acid reflux problem.

“ 44% of Americans have heartburn at least once a month. 25 to 35% have reflux. Acid-blocking drugs are the third most prescribed medications in the country. Recently, I was at a medical insurance company, and they told me that the third most expensive condition after heart disease and diabetes for their population is reflux because of all the scopes, pills, and procedures needed to treat it. Reflux causes tremendous problems, and nobody is asking why. Why are we suffering from reflux? What is the cause? Is it something we are doing or something we are eating? Is there some other factor that’s driving this epidemic?

Getting to the root cause of reflux

In Functional Medicine, we ask, “What is the root cause of the problem, and how do we correct it?” For reflux, the root cause is sometimes very straightforward. It may be what we are eating. Some common triggers of reflux include:

  • Fried foods
  • Spicy foods
  • Citrus foods
  • Tomato-based foods
  • Processed foods
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Smoking

Acid reflux could be caused by other factors, as well:

  • Eating right before bed
  • Eating with an already full stomach—which can cause the food to come back up.
  • Being overweight and having a big belly—which can push your stomach up, causing reflux.
  • Chronic stress affects the nerves in your stomach, making it impossible to process the food properly. This will cause food to go up instead of down. In fact, in order to digest your food well, you have to relax. So, breathing before eating is a very important tool.
  • Loss of magnesium, which is caused by stress. Magnesium is needed to relax the sphincter at the bottom of your stomach that actually lets the food go down. When you don’t have enough magnesium, the food goes up.
  • Food sensitivities that may not be diagnosed by your average physician, including gluten and dairy.
  • Bad bacteria or yeast growing in your stomach. If you have been on a lot of antibiotics, if you have been on hormones, if you eat a lot of sugar and processed food, you could grow bad bugs in your gut, and they ferment and push things around and cause reflux.
  • H. Pylori, a bacterium that affects a number of people in our population, can sometimes be linked to reflux.

So, there’s a whole series of causes, everything from what you are eating, to your lifestyle, to stress, to smoking, caffeine, alcohol, to bacteria in your gut, to food sensitivities—all these things can trigger reflux.

Correcting your acid reflux at its source

The key to solving this problem isn’t taking an acid blocker, which can cause all sorts of problems. It may give you symptomatic relief, but there are problems with these drugs.

The key isn’t taking the drug. It’s finding the cause. Functional Medicine is medicine by cause not by symptom, and that is exactly what we do with the reflux.

There are some really simple actions you can take to see if there are any specific triggers that are causing your problem.

  • Fix your diet. The things that are common and easy to remove are spicy foods, citrus foods, tomato-based foods, and fried foods. Simple.
  • Get rid of possible food allergens for a short period of time, like two weeks. Gluten and dairy are the most common ones.
  • Try to get rid of the triggers for a few weeks, like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, all of which trigger reflux. Not forever, but try it for a little while, and see if it’s causing your problem.
  • Change your lifestyle. For example, don’t eat three hours before bed. Give yourself a chance to digest your food.
  • Deal with stress before you eat. Try a very simple technique that I call “Take Five.” Take five breaths before each meal. Count in to the count of five, out to the count of five, and breathe deeply. You’ll notice a huge relaxation in your nervous system, and you’ll digest your food better.
  • Try specific supplements to help. My favorite is licorice. We call it deglycerized licorice or DGL, which helps to coat the stomach and prevent reflux. You can chew two or three tablets before you eat. I also like to use a glutamine, aloe, and licorice combination that can be taken as a powder, a teaspoon in water, 10 to 15 minutes before you eat. It really coats the stomach lining and helps you digest your food. Try probiotics, like Acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. Also, you can use digestive enzymes that help break down the food. Also, magnesium is a very powerful relaxation mineral for the digestive system that helps prevent reflux.
  • Get tested. If you are still not getting better after taking these steps, then, you’ll want to do some testing, which you can do with your Functional Medicine doctor:
  • Test for H. Pylori
  • Check for celiac and gluten sensitivity
  • Check for food sensitivities
  • Check for abnormal bugs in your gut, bacterial overgrowth, yeast overgrowth, and parasites“

Dietary supplements and vitamins are different

Buy dietary supplements – published by vendors. Improve your well-being! Are you sure?

Before you buy dietary supplements and vitamins- make sure you buy the most suitable ones.

Dietary supplements and vitamins are different – says Dietary Supplement expert Angelica Kuznetsova. The short paragraph is further abbreviated.

„Take vitamins correctly

We need to become some biochemists if we want to choose the best vitamins and dietary supplements. And you need to know at what point and with whom to take them.

We use vitamins, minerals, various healing plant extracts, omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids and many other useful substances, because we want to preserve good health. Vitamin intake is also included in therapeutic programs to help people recover from various health problems. Many doctors and health professionals recommend taking them in our time. There are dozens even hundreds of beautiful boxes with vitamins in each pharmacy. Tablets, capsules and infusions are advertised on the radio, on TV, on the Internet, in magazines. Promising to cure almost every ailment. Are all biologically active preparations equally useful? Does the principle work: the more expensive is the best?

In order for every box of vitamins or dietary supplements, such as turmeric, to benefit, every person who cares about their health must carefully examine the composition of each preparation. Only in this way You will protect yourself and Your loved ones from the use of unworthy and even harmful preparations and the senseless waste of money.

Some doctors do not recommend taking dietary supplements precisely because they do not have time to study their chemical forms and formulations, but without studies, the patient may also harm. You need to know two most important things.

Vitamins have various forms- they are active and inactive

For example vitamins B₂, B₆, B₁₂ and folate are simple- inactive forms and active- coenzyme and methylated forms. The body must change inactive forms, and this process requires a lot of energy. Very badly inactive forms are replaced by elderly body or body of persons with impaired liver and pancreas, poor stomach and intestines. Replacing inactive forms with an active form is not able by people who have genetic polymorphism- altered genes which, for example, are not able to change inactive forms the active forms and are responsible for converting vitamin B₁₂ and folate into an active methylated form.

If this is possible, completely healthy people (not only individuals who have health problems) who experience increased psychoemotional exertion on a daily basis, and also in order to avoid a deficiency of specific substances in the body, should take vitamins in their active forms.

Trace elements are organic and inorganic.

Trace elements are minerals that our body needs in microscopic doses: zinc, selenium, iodine, manganese, boron, lithium, molybdenum.

Trace elements are minerals required in high doses: magnesium, silicon, calcium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, sulphur.

All these minerals do not form in the human or animal or in plants; they are found in land, water, stones, sand, oceans. However, plants, animals and also humans can accumulate these minerals in the body.

Specialists are still arguing about whether the inorganic forms of minerals are harmful. A completely healthy person can turn them into biologically active organic forms, and often this can be useful, but in the long run it is like a constant walk with rubber boots- you’re clothed, but with time you’ll definitely have problems with your feet.

Inorganic forms are always characterized by side effects, and they can irritate the stomach. For example. the inorganic form of calcium, calcium carbonate, is also an „E“ (E170). When a person frequently consumes calcium carbonate, it can be overdosed and hypercalcemia may develop- calcium can settle in the bones joints and other tissues of the body. A person may get sick, stomach pain, possible vomiting and changes in mental state.

For example inorganic selenium (sodium selenium) belongs to first generation selenium preparations with poor bioavailability (poorly absorbed and misappropriated by the body). It has been shown to have unfavourable side effects – if you take it, You may feel sick, possible abdominal discomfort, allergic reactions and other symptoms. It is not advisable to apply selenium inorganic forms even in animal husbandry, what to talk about humans.

For example, iron is a very important trace element, is a very common form of inorganic form (iron sulfate) in food additives. This product is advertised and used in people who are also sick, although the MEDLINE database is available in more than 200 studies conducted between 1983 and 2010 which confirm that iron sulphate has side effects, and its use may lead to complications, ranging from diarrhea and nausea to allergy and anaphylactic shock. Iron sulfate can damage the esophagus, stomach, mouth, provoke infectious diseases and cause skin problems.

Organic forms of minerals are a new generation of substances that are suitable for the human body, especially rarely have no any side effects; they are extremely difficult to overdose, the body naturally absorbs and uses such minerals, and these substances are effective.“

Yellow recommends only vitamins of active form and trace elements of organic form.

Basis of Beauty is Health

In many ways, in order to rejuvenate and beautify, we forget that beauty lies inside us. Natural attractiveness of skin color, flashes the eyes, shiny hair – all this reflects not our concern for cosmetics, but in care of physical and mental health. After all, health is the basis for everything. Therefore, before spending a lot of money on beauty treatments, think about how to take care of health? Physical health has a direct impact on how we look, and it is known from ancient times. It is not surprising that advertisements also pay attention to this. Is that true? Any scientist and employee of beauty institutes will confirm that physical health and the healthy state of all components of the body need to be strengthened from the inside. Therefore, it is very important to take care of: a balanced diet; fresh air; in the right mode. There are very many theories about the balanced and healthy diet, even one can find formulas that mathematically calculate the individual diet of food. In addition, the dietitian and any therapist will confirm that food enriched with vitamins necessary for the body with minerals and elements will help to preserve health, as well as look attractive for a long time. So it is not surprising that the beauty by using food recipes is increasing. True, recipes can be simple. Let’s say a very useful salad rich in carrots, walnuts, as well as eat more apples, oats, drink herbal teas, sweeten honey and diversify your food with lemon. Correctly selected cosmetics are also the basis of beauty, which complements the food we consume. Physical health has been observed to be elasticly associated with mental health. Women will surely understand that it is very difficult to remain unique and attractive when at the same time something bad lying in personal life, haunted by sad thoughts, depression knocking into the window. All this negatively affects the body itself, the inner charm disappears. Want to be psychologically strong? Take care of a strong and friendly family, a beloved job and find an hobby. Of course, it is easy to say, but in most cases not everything is going as we have planned. Therefore, follow the rules to make you feel happy: avoid conflicts; round up the „sharp corners“; do just what you like; do not let yourself overwork; go out of bad and sad thoughts; load up with positive emotions every day. What are positive emotions? Watch what you like: go to the cinema, to the museum, to the theater, to the parties. Buy something new – enough and little things that make you smile. Rest more in nature, enjoy a warm bath in the cold season. All of the above methods allow to maintain internal harmony, which means – and stay young. After all, when you are in a good mood, you enjoy life – all this is reflected in sight, in action, and infects those around you. Source: www.zvalus.lt

We often start taking food supplements for restoring external beauty: smoother and brighter skin, stronger hair, etc. But we do not feel more affected, so we buy other supplements, but again we do not get a greater effect.

Health Benefits of Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal that is of USP (U. S. Pharmacopoeia) food-grade quality offers several important benefits. While charcoal can be made from coal, wood, or other substances, USP food-grade activated charcoal is produced under stringent requirements since this form of activated charcoal is designed to be ingested as well as used in blood filtering devises such as kidney dialysis units. Activated charcoal made by burning the starting material, e.g., coconut shells or wood, at a very high heat then activating the charcoal in a furnace at high temperatures of 1,700° to 1,800°F with steam in the absence of oxygen. This creates millions of tiny pores per gram. That is why activated carbon is used for water filtration. But, taken orally activated charcoal’s pores can bind toxins and gas to escort them out of the body. The primary uses of activated charcoal are in general detoxification, alleviation of bloating and gas, and lessening body odor from within. Here is a little more in-depth discussion of these applications and others.
More advice from Dr. Michael Murray who published more than 30 books, including the bestselling Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine

Detoxification Aid in Poisonings
Activated charcoal is used in emergency rooms all over the world as a safe and effective treatment of poisoning and drug overdoses. However, do not use activated charcoal at home to treat an overdose unless instructed to do so by a physician or poison control center. Overdoses and poisoning can be quite serious, even life-threatening so that the person should be monitored in an emergency room.
Activated charcoal works so well in many types of poisonings because of the chemical process of adsorption, a chemical reaction where positive charged toxins and gases bind to the negative charge of the porous surface of the activated charcoal. With all the millions of pores, the surface area of activated coconut charcoal is able to bind to an incredibly large amount of toxins and gas. One gram of activated charcoal has about the same total surface area as a football field. That is why it is such a powerful tool in helping deal with accidental poisoning. Sometimes being preferred over stomach pumping. In severe poisonings, very large dosages (e.g., 1 gm per kg body weight) are often required.

Internal Cleansing Agent
For the same reasons it is so helpful in poisonings, activated charcoal can provide support as an internal cleansing agent. In addition to binding some forms of toxins for removal, it also is able to bind bile acids and escort them out of the body. This action is quite important for internal cleansing as many toxic compounds are excreted in the bile. By binding the bile acid the activated charcoal also helps eliminate any toxins that are also bound to the bile acid. Activated charcoal can also be helpful in binding and eliminating heavy metals like lead and mercury.

Digestive Aid for Gas and Bloating
One of the more popular and clinically validated uses of activated charcoal is as a natural aid for excessive flatulence and bloating. This application takes advantage of the action of activated charcoal in binding gas in its millions of pores. For best results, take 500 mg prior to meals. Furthermore, look for combination products that combine the activated charcoal with alpha-galactosidase (an important digestive enzymes in fighting gas and bloating) along with ginger extract to ease intestinal discomfort.

Some Important Guidelines
Be sure to drink enough water each day when taking activated charcoal as it can promote dehydration if adequate amounts of water aren’t consumed. Activated charcoal is generally very well-tolerated. Because it can interfere with the absorption of nutrients, supplements and prescription medications, take activated charcoal on an empty stomach 60 to 90 minutes prior to meals, supplements and prescription medications.

3 most usefull supplements for women

While the best source of essential nutrients is a healthy and balanced diet, it’s not always easy for women to eat just the right amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats on a daily basis. It’s no wonder that so many women choose to take health supplements.
Depending on your diet, lifestyle, routine, and life stage, some supplements will hold distinct advantages over others. However, there are a few that stand out as priorities for helping a woman’s body function optimally.
MD Venus Ramos explains most usefull supplements for women on iherb.com blog

Vitamin D
Vitamin D contributes to multiple functions in the body, from strong bones to a healthy immune system. However, probably one of vitamin D’s most important effects for women is on cardiovascular function. Research has found that people with low blood levels of vitamin D are more likely to have strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, or high blood pressure later in life. For pregnant women, low vitamin D levels are associated with preeclampsia and other unfavorable outcomes. A similar association is seen between a low vitamin D level and development of diabetes.
Your body can make adequate vitamin D if your skin is exposed to enough sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. However, one study found that 36% of healthy adolescents and 57% of adults in the U.S. had insufficient levels of vitamin D.

Why are so many of us deficient in vitamin D?
It’s not easy to maintain sufficient levels of Vitamin D given our modern diet and lifestyle. These days, many people are spending fewer hours outside. In urban and polluted areas, UVB light gets filtered out, so even though you may be getting sun exposure, your skin may not be getting enough UVB light. Furthermore, to protect against skin cancer, we often apply sunscreen whenever we do get sun exposure. When properly applied, sunscreen reduces our ability to absorb vitamin D by more than 90%.
Other factors that can contribute to vitamin D deficiency are obesity, darker skin color, and problems absorbing fat (e.g., gluten, infections, or toxins could be causing an intestinal problem like “leaky gut”).

How can we get enough vitamin D?
Being out in the sun for 20 minutes every day, if you aren’t wearing sunscreen or do not have a dark skin color, can help your body make enough vitamin D. You can also get vitamin D from egg yolks, fatty fish (like salmon), and organ meat (like beef liver). In addition, breakfast cereal and milk are often artificially fortified with vitamin D.
The Endocrine Society, a leading endocrine research organization, recommends a vitamin D blood level of 30 ng/mL as a minimum and, if levels are below that, a daily supplement of 1500 to 2000 IU. Due to widespread deficiencies, it is wise to ask your doctor to check your 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, so you know how much vitamin D you should actually take.

Which type of vitamin D makes the best supplement?
Although five types of vitamin D exist, the body primarily uses vitamin D2 (also called ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). In order to be absorbed, the body must first convert both forms of the vitamin. Because vitamin D3 undergoes this process more quickly and effectively than vitamin D2, it is the preferred variant.

Fish Oil
Fish oil is a potent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can also reduce inflammation. Omega-3s are also associated with improved mood and memory and decreased risks of depression and dementia. Research has demonstrated all of these benefits with two specific types of omega 3s—EPA and DHA.
In the case of omega-3 intake, you might consider it better to opt for fish oil supplements as opposed to eating adequate amounts of fish due to concerns over mercury content in the latter. When choosing a fish oil, be sure to opt for fish sources that have been tested and shown to be free of mercury and other toxic components. 5-star rating of the International Fish Oil Standards for quality, safety, and potency.

Curcumin
Curcumin is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. This is of particular interest to women because as their estrogen levels decline with aging, they are more susceptible to problems due to inflammation. Chronic inflammation is associated with diseases like cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s.
Curcumin is a component of the spice known as turmeric. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is only about 3% by weight. So it is difficult to achieve effective anti-inflammatory levels simply by adding turmeric to food. Furthermore, curcumin is poorly absorbed in the bloodstream when consumed on its own. However, taking curcumin with piperine (a substance found in black pepper) greatly enhances its absorption.
For optimal effectiveness, look for curcumin products that include piperine.

Digestive Enzymes to Aid in Food Intolerance

A food allergy or food intolerance occurs when there is an adverse reaction to the ingestion of a food. The distinction between the two terms is that in a classic food allergy the immune system is involved to produce a true allergic reaction to produce more severe symptoms while in a food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and often limited to digestive problems.
More advice from Dr. Michael Murray who published more than 30 books, including the bestselling Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine
A classic food allergy occurs when an ingested food molecule interacts with the immune system that results in the release of histamine and other allergy producing compounds to produce swelling and inflammation. In a food intolerance, the root cause is an inability to digest certain foods due to lack of a digestive enzyme. For example, approximately 65% of adults have a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Lactose, a sugar in milk and milk products that is broken down by the enzyme lactase produced in the small intestine. If the lactose is not broken down by the enzyme lactase it can produce a lot of gastrointestinal symptoms especially gas, bloating, cramping pain, and diarrhea. Taking supplemental lactase enzyme can help digest the lactase and allow people with lactose intolerance to eliminate these symptoms of food intolerance. Keep in mind, however, that many people who are lactose intolerant also have trouble breaking down milk proteins as well. Therefore, products that combine lactase with protein-digesting enzymes (proteases) are usually a much better choice.

Using digestive enzyme supplements in food intolerance
Not only can digestive enzyme supplementation make the dietary approaches to food intolerance work better, in many cases enzyme supplementation may be more useful than dietary changes. Many people with food intolerances benefit from a 14-day trial with a high potency digestive enzyme preparation. Ideally, one that contains a blend of different variants of the major categories of enzymes with different ranges of pH activation so that the enzymes are effective throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. Most digestive enzymes are effective or active within a very narrow pH range and since the pH of the human gastrointestinal tract varies from very acid to alkaline, most enzyme supplements are not effective throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. So, while an enzyme supplement may be helpful in one part of the digestive system, it may be totally inactive in another. Using mixtures of carefully blended enzymes have been shown to work 3X stronger and work more than 6X faster than leading other enzyme preparations.
In the 14-day challenge simply take one or two capsules of the enzyme supplement before each meal for 14 days. Improving digestion via supplemental enzymes is often all that is necessary to eliminate a food intolerance.

Can digestive enzymes help with gluten intolerance?
Yes, products that combine protein-digesting enzymes known as proteases and the specific gluten-digesting enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) can really help. Here is a quick refresher. Gluten is the main protein complex primarily found in grains including wheat, barley, spelt and rye. Many people have an intolerance to gluten along with casein, a protein found in milk. When ingested in intolerant individuals these proteins can produce gastrointestinal discomfort, especially gas and bloating.
Although the popular solution for gluten and casein intolerance is following a gluten-free, casein-free diet, and eliminating the offending proteins will reduce discomfort, there are often hidden sources of gluten or casein in foods that can still lead to discomfort.
Many gluten-free products are available in natural foods stores and even in mainstream supermarkets. Beneficial grains for replacement of gluten sources include amaranth, quinoa, and a variety of rice, such as brown, red, black and wild rice. Casein is found in milk and dairy products. Obviously, when avoiding gluten and casein reading food labels carefully is required.
Supplemental digestive enzyme preparations can help people tolerate lower levels of gluten or casein intake especially during the initial phase of gluten and/or casein avoidance. Look for products that provide dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). This enzyme targets both gliadin and casein and is resistant to breakdown by other digestive enzymes. DPP-IV is thought to be one of the key enzymes responsible for the digestion of these proteins and is known to be found in lower amounts in the intestinal lining of individuals with gluten sensitivity and intolerance. In fact, there is an inverse relationship between the level of DPP-IV and intestinal damage in people with gluten sensitivity. In other words, the lower the DPP-IV the more significant the damage to the intestinal lining. Preparations containing DPP-IV are often recommended to safeguard against any hidden sources of gluten.

Final Comments
Digestive complaints affect nearly one out of four people. In most cases, the symptoms reflect disturbed digestive function or food intolerance rather than an underlying disease. Functional gastrointestinal disorders include occasional indigestion or heartburn, functional dyspepsia, excessive flatulence, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Supporting digestion by using digestive enzyme preparations and other natural approaches is often the best route to elimination of these bothersome (and sometimes embarrassing) symptoms.
